After more than a decade of exposure to rain and all seasons, the posts on this Nanaimo lakeside home became quite rotten.
The metal caps were added only recently, however, too late, as the water had penetrated and led to extensive rot.
The posts were replaced with peeled fir logs and the fir railings were replaced with rot-resistant western red cedar. 2 coats of Transformations Oil Stain in Dark Red was applied to all replacement wood and logs. All joints were also chinked with Log Builder chinking to prevent water intrusion. The original fir railings also had to be replaced as they were rotting at the ends, and they were replaced with cedar beams, colour matched, and the original glass reinstalled. The client also wanted the old glass panels removed and new glass clamps and glass panels installed along with the replacement cedar railings.
The result is a beautifully restored and protected exterior that blends natural materials with long-term durability.
